Filters
(http://www.weatherscapes.com/techniques.php?c...)
Landscape photographers use many types of filters, some being very expensive. Luckily, with weather photography you don't need many kinds of filters. Often, only a polarizing filter is sufficient. In fact, a polarizing filter is all I use for my photography, except for photographing the sun, with which I use a neutral density filter.

Filters - UV or not UV?
UV filters are supposed to block UV light. So, for the newcomers to photography let's first look at what UV light is and why you would want to block it. The "traditional" visible spectrum runs from red to violet. Red light has the longest wavelength and violet the shortest. Light which has a longer wavelength than red is called infrared, and light which has a shorter wavelength than violet is called ultra violet or UV. The wavelength of light is measure in units of nanometers (abbreviated as nm), and 1nm is a billionth of a meter (that's a US billion or 1000 million, not a UK billion which is a million million!). Light shorter in wavelength than about 400nm is called ultra violet, light longer in wavelength than 700nm is called infrared.

Filters for Outdoor Photography
(http://www.naturephotographers.net/dw0502-1.h...)
For me, as a professional landscape photographer, filters are as important as the camera or lens. Without filters I have a hard time making memorable images. Why? Well, two reasons: first, filters are to photography what adjectives are to writing. Without them my images barely rise above functional prose. With filters, my images have flavor, color, and excitement. Secondly, filters allow film and digital cameras to see things more like our eyes see a scene. The range of brightness that film and digital sensors can record is far less than the human eye can see, to be able to accurately render the scene as our eye sees it, we need the help of filters.

Creative Camera Filters
(http://www.fodors.com/travel-photography/arti...)
If you've done any digital-image editing, you know that there is an endless number of creative effects that can be applied to images during processing, like changing the colors of an image or applying effects to make the photo look like a watercolor painting. Some photographers, however, still prefer to apply creative effects in-camera during the actual shooting. If you don't do your own image editing, then in-camera filtering is a good way to add creative twists to your digital images. Here are some of the more common lens filters used for creative effect:
