Sample and examples for "Street photography"
| Street Photography
|
| The best thing about street photography is that it is possible for the final viewer of a print to see more than the original photographer. One of the great things about a city is that more things are happening, even within a small neighborhood, at any moment than any human can comprehend. Photography allows us to freeze one of those moments and study all of the small dramas that were taking place. |

| Street photography
|
| Street photography uses the techniques of straight photography in that it shows a pure vision of something, like holding up a mirror to society. Street photography often tends to be ironic and can be distanced from its subject matter and often concentrates on a single human moment, caught at a decisive or poignant moment. On the other hand, much street photography takes the opposite approach and provides a very literal and extremely personal rendering of the subject matter, giving the audience a more visceral experience of walks of life they might only be passingly familiar with. In the 20th century, street photographers have provided an exemplary and detailed record of street culture in Europe and North America, and elsewhere to a somewhat lesser extent. Many street photographers adopt a specialization. For example, some street photographers might emphasize the ugliness of modern society by depicting drug use, prostitution, and other forms of crime and/or exploitation. Others might focus on the humorous moments that usually go unnoticed. Either form is a constituent part of street photography. |

| How to Expose for the Night
|
| Night photography is one area where you can forget about multi matrix, spot, honeycombs any other metering system!
Why? Because the only good light meter for night photography is your eye and experience. Because we are no longer dealing with daylight, a metered reading can only be used as a "starting point". There are a few factors in night photography that make camera meters unreliable. Exposure meters work on the premise that the area being read contains equal amounts of light and dark areas. It can then integrate the reading to a tone of gray. 90% of the time this works fine and experience (or one of our courses) will tell you when meters are not 100% accurate. For example, large amounts of dark unlit areas with small bright points of street lighting being one of them.
In most night situations it's best to start with a shutter speed of about 2 seconds with a mid range aperture of roughly f5.6 if depth of field is not a priority. If the exposure has to be lengthened, use the shutter. If your camera has shutter speeds of up to 30 seconds, use the Self Timer to fire the shutter. If your camera does not have such long shutter speeds and the situation requires it, use the "B" setting. In this case though it is strongly recommended to use some form of remote release. |

| Enigma Variations
|
| In landscape, nature and wildlife photography explaining why some photographs "work", or are better than others, is not that difficult. Issues of formal composition, structure, balance, and so forth can be explored. I critique submissions by readers every month in my Submissions Contest, and after reading it for a while you'll see the topics that arise most. In other words, landscape photography can usually be learned through study and practice.
But street photography is another matter. The rules (to the extent that there are any), are different. Street photography is mainly about photographing people in a specific context. Why should it be difficult? |

| Documentary Street Photography
|
| While I am primarily known these days for my landscape work, I began my career as a documentary photographer and photojournalist. This was from the mid-60's through the late 70's. I've recently returned to street shooting and am thrilled with rediscovering this side of photography. |
