film speed
Sample and examples for "film speed"
Exposure times, aperture settings and film speed
(http://www.weatherscapes.com/techniques.php?c...)
With 'passive' photography (no artificial lighting used) such as weather and landscape photography, there are three variables that determine how much light reaches the film (or digital sensor) to yield a properly exposed photo. These are the lens aperture, shutter speed, and film or sensor sensitivity.

The EI (exposure index)
The exposure index is a measure of the amount of light to which film is being exposed. It mixes the shutter speed and aperture, which together determine the total number of light quanta (photons) reaching the film during the exposure.

Suggested films
(http://www.weatherscapes.com/techniques.php?c...)
Doing weather photography, you will use a wide range of film speed and types. Here is where the problem starts: if you just used one film for all photography, you would have that in your camera and get away with it, but if you use different types of film for different phenomena, you will generally need several cameras, or interchangeable film backs, one for each film type. That is what I have become used to do, and now I have reduced the number of frequently used types of film to two, for two cameras.

Exposure Calculator
(http://www.robert-barrett.com/photo/exposure_...)
Below you will find an Exposure Calculator that, for the given light conditions and film speed, will calculate the appropriate camera settings to yield a correct exposure. For background theory on obtaining proper exposures, be sure to read the information on the Exposure page. Below the calculator are instructions on how to use the calculator.

Film speed Here is something else just to confuse you. In order for your lightmeter to come up with a suitable combination of aperture size and shutter speed it needs to know how sensitive to light a particular film is. A film's sensitivity is known as its ' speed' and is expressed as an ASA/ISO number.

Exposure
(http://photo.net/learn/making-photographs/exp...)
If you ask a professional for some exposure advice, the typical answer is "f/8 and be there." This is a bit of an in joke. The "f/8" part of it sounds vaguely technical and useful, since f/8 is an actual aperture that you can set on most lenses. But it doesn't mean anything without an accompanying shutter speed or film ISO.

Film Speed and Film Types

Other than your choice of lens, the film choice will have the biggest impact on the quality of the final results.

The Sunny f/16 Rule
(http://www.smashandpeas.com/the-sunny-f16-rul...)
Quite simply the Sunny f/16 Rule states that: On a bright sunny day, with camera aperture set to f/16, the shutter speed will be 1 over the ISO value. eg when using ISO 100 film, aperture set to f/16 the shutter speed will be 1/125 (closest to 100).

ISO rating for Film Speed
(http://www.geofflawrence.com/photography_tuto...)
ISO stands for 'International Organization for Standardization' and their film speed ratings are used to indicate the relative amount of light necessary to give a proper exposure. A normal film will be rated at ISO 100...

Reciprocity and Reciprocity Failure
(http://www.geofflawrence.com/photography_tuto...)
Reciprocity is the interchange of shutter speed and aperture. This rather posh word just means that a combination of a shutter speed of 1/125th of a second with an aperture of f8, which is referred to as an exposure setting of '1/125th at f8', will give the same exposure to the film or digital sensor as 1/250th at f5.6, which is the same as 1/500th at f4 etc.
