| Scanning For The Big Print
|
| Always scan at your scanner’s highest possible optical resolution. You may want to produce a small print today, but a large one next year. Getting the best possible scan the first time only makes sense. You’ll have a high-quality master file that you easily can resize for any purpose in image-processing software, such as Adobe Photoshop or Elements. You’ll choose the output dpi/ppi when you prepare the image for printing. Different manufacturers suggest different dpi/ppi outputs for their particular printers. For example, most Canon printers use 200 dpi, and Epson often suggests 360. |

The right business decision is not so much about getting the "best" digital camera, it's buying the right camera for the type of business you have. Because I am a travel photographer, my need for resolution and dynamic range forced me to stay with film till digital sensors could rival what I could get from a high-resolution scan of a quality slide. That day came when Canon came out with the EOS 1Ds Mark II, a 17 megapixel camera whose resolution yields an image 4992 pixels wide (or tall). Also, it's not just about resolution, there are many other valuable features, not the least of which is that the sensor has an ISO range that goes from 50 to 3200 with minimal noise.

| Probably the most important issue is which digital resolution (number of sensor pixels) would give the same resolution as a 35mm-frame of, say, slide film. I believe that a 10 to 12 megapixel digital sensor gives the same resolution as a 35mm film when scanned with a professional film scanner. The highest resolution obtainable from a 35mm frame is about 4000 DPI, which corresponds to an image of about 5000x3000 pixels (15 megapixels). However, most lenses are not capable of obtaining such sharpness in the first place. 12 megapixel sensors are available at the time of this writing (January 2005). |

| A Beginner's Guide To Creating Stitched Images Using PTAssembler
|
| This photography tutorial explains how to create a stitched image using PTAssembler. PTAssembler is a "helper program" that works with Panorama Tools to stitch images together into panoramas and high resolution mosaics. There are many programs that can stitch images together, but PTAssembler allows much more manual interaction than most...and can be used to create extremely high resolution images of unsurpassed quality by stitching in two dimensions (both vertically and horizontally). |

| High Resolution Digital Images
|
| All of the images on this site have been created by joining two or more individual digital camera pictures into one larger composite image. When done well, this composite image is completely seamless, and there is no indication of where the images have been merged. (Here are "before" and "after" pictures illustrating the individual and final composite images.) |

| Digital Camera Resolution Demystified

| Resolution is the most talked about digital camera characteristic and is often used to describe image quality. Yet, the fundamental lack of accurate information surrounding resolution makes it one of the most misunderstood discussion topic. |
